"The Guitar Fretboard is a built upon the standard musical alphabet which follows as" A - A# - B - C - C# - D - D# - E - F - F# - G - G#
Guitar Frets (The lines that crosses the parellel lines vertically on the above diagram) have specific pitches that allows us to play all the notes on the musical alphabet
So "FRETS" arrange the musical alphabet notes on the strings of guitar, meaning on the "E" string, the first fret would play as the "F" note (Because F comes after E), then the arrangement will follow as

Open Strings refer to strings which are played without placing your hand on any the frets
